IN A NUTSHELL
A fine art print, made to order, of Doubt from the Spirit Vertigo Tarot collection, 8x10".
SYMBOLISM
Doubt stands in place of The Chariot in this collection. In the original concept art for this series, I'd been planning to call The Chariot "Mastery." By the time I completed the work, I no longer believed in mastery at all, and found much of the word's connotations unpalatable. I've been in a Dark Night of The Soul and actively questioning both my spirituality and my cynicism for several years now, and I'm afraid I've quite lost my taste for the concepts of heroism, over-achievement, and forward movement from the driver's seat. I see Doubt, mystery, uncertainty, possibility, and questioning as a different and invaluable compasses, guides and drivers. The deer in the headlights contemplates as a double headed serpent nips at his throat and whispers in his ear. Jeweled peonies lend riches and antidotes. In the Victorian floral code, peonies symbolize bashfulness. Historically, they were thought to cure snakebites. The mountain laurel in the background symbolizes achievement, victory, resilience, perseverance, and the ability to root and throve in harsh soil. This beautiful plant also represents toxicity and paradox, as it's poisonous.
