SYMBOLISM
 
The hollowed out, pocketed hand of an innocent plays host to the candle flame, the moth, the garter snake, and the kitchen twine, with apple blossoms, lichens, roses, ghost pipe flowers, and ferns. In the far distant background, a tattered Veil trails through the air like smoke. Apple blossoms and ferns recall the promise of spring and early summer. Ghost flowers bloom an eerie white in dark and damp midsummer woodlands, having long lost the ability to photosynthesize. They obtain all their nutrients through support from fungal mycelial networks. Lichens are hybrid species born in a cooperative or parasitic merger of algae and fungi. Together, these stranger third things sprung from two distinct kingdoms are capable of surviving harsher conditions and more marginal terrains than either can survive alone. On geological timescales, these humble and still creatures break rock into soil and become terraformers for other life. And roses represent a lot of things.
