SYMBOLISM
 
Reflection stands in place of Judgement in this collection. This scene explores judgement in the sense of discernment and contemplation. "Reflection" here means both introspection and the reversal of the light through a medium like glass or water. I associate Judgement with contact between Seeker and Spirit, but I wanted to consider that contact in more grounded and animist ways than our usual "beamed up" or raptured iconography. The waterline in the reflecting pool marks an edge where words collide--upper ground and under ground, matter and spirit. The marsh is full of discarded masks. The weeping willow recalls funerary iconography and wetland serenity. The hollows in the tree and the ripples in the water are full of eyes and spirits. At the roots of the tree, a dark angel reclines with a message in a bottle in her hands, ready to cast to the seeker or the whims of the tidal currents.
